Financista estadounidense. Mientras trabajaba como mandadero, estudiaba aritmética y contabilidad en su tiempo libre. En 1839 instaló un negocio de venta de abarrotes al por mayor que le generó dinero suficiente para iniciar una empresa de embarque en el río Hudson. Fue congresista entre 1853 y 1857. Sage invirtió con éxito en el ferrocarril La Crosse en Wisconsin. Finalmente adquirió participaciones en más de 40 empresas de ferrocarriles y fue director o presidente ejecutivo de 20 de ellas. Colaboró en la organización de Atlantic & Pacific Telegraph Co. En 1872 creó las opciones en el mercado de valores (opciones de compra o venta de una cierta cantidad de acciones a un precio determinado y dentro de un plazo establecido), pero dejó de realizar estas transacciones tras perder US$7 millones en la crisis financiera de 1884. Después de su muerte, su esposa, Margaret Olivia Sage, creó la Fundación Russell Sage y el Russell Sage College (Troy, N.Y.).
